Pop's Place owner wins 2012 Saba Idol Finals December 1, 2012 - By Xallers on November 27, 2012
The winner of the ninth annual Saba Idol competition was crowned at Scout's Place restaurant in Windwardside on Friday night. The honours went to Alphonso Colmenares, in daily life the owner of Pop's Place in Fort Bay harbour. Originally from Colombia, Colmenares was the 2011 Saba Idol's first runner-up with his Spanish salsa and merengue songs.
This year's runner-up was Cory Junker, with only one point behind Colmenares' 165. Junker, who hails from the United States, is the owner of Saba Coffee House and Café Luna roastery in The Bottom. Canadian Saba Comprehensive School teacher Mark Dodds was second runner-up. This year's jury comprised former Saba Idol winner and barbershop owner from the Dominican Republic Johnny Mateo, Saba Divers and Scout's Place owner Barbara Tooten from Germany and former Idol winner Irvine "Topo" Riley from Saba.
Colmenares convinced the jury and the crowd with his salsa and merengue songs and stage acting. He danced on stage together with former Saba Idol and dancer Micheline Hinse. Junker was a blast with his rendition of several rock-and-roll songs and his special performance of "I'm too sexy." The scene was complete when his wife Kali Junker came on stage and ripped his shirt off in one move. The scene sparked a lot of excitement, especially with the women in the crowd, as the performer sported his muscles and tattoos on top of his vocal skills. Dodds' Culture Club performance in a Boy George outfit proved no less fantastic.
Scout's Place manager Wolfgang Tooten was the evening's host, putting on a fun and entertaining show for the large crowd. He mentioned the continued support of the many local as well as St. Maarten businesses that patron the annual competition. The growing fame of Saba Idols brought together many locals and foreigners alike, and reportedly led to several former competitors and St. Maarten residents booking trips to Saba in conjunction with the Saba Idol finals. The support and growing popularity of the competition opens the way for ambitious "super-special plans" for next year's 10th Saba Idol, said Tooten.

Antique Inn renovation December 13, 2009 - The historical Antique Inn is currently being renovated.
The Antique Inn property was privately owned by one of the Simmons families. Around the end of the 19th century the Government decided to purchase it as the residence for the Lt. Governor and his office was also in the building downstairs.
In the ninteen twenties Governor W.F.M. Lampe purchased the home of his father-in-law Capt. Thomas C. Vanterpool for the home of the Lt. Governor. He also purchased the property next to the new home of the Lt. Governor which when the old house was torn down became the Queen Wilhelmina Park.
The former home and office of the Lt. Governor was turned into a Passangrahan. That is the Indonesian word for Passing Big Shot. It served to accomodate Government officials visiting Saba from Curacao and the other Dutch islands and also the occasional writer or tourist would be housed there. The Public Library in The Bottom was housed in the downstairs room which formerly had served as the office of the Lt. Governor. Much later the place now known as Scouts Place was also purchased by the Government as a Passangrahan for Windwardside.
In 1971 the Passangrahan in The Bottom was leased to the late Mr. Clinton Cranston who renamed it The Antique Inn. After he died the building was put up for auction though it remains in the hands of the Island Government of Saba.
The old building has now been given a new lease on life by Mr. Henk Wolf. There are negotiations going on with the Dutch Government to turn it into the new regional service center, to reflect the new role which the Dutch Government will play after 1910 when they take over all the tasks which should have been the responsibility of the Government of The Netherlands Antilles headquartered in Willemstad.
