The Saba 16 arrived home Monday afternoon from winning the Netherlands Antilles School Basketball tournament to a cheering crowd of family and friends. Minister Errol Cova, who was leaving on the plane that brought in the triumphant players, was the first on the tarmac to congratulate the young men. The gold trophy was help aloft by team Captain Danny Johnson, who hopped off the plane with a taped ankle.
Coach Selwyn Ballijn said that the team had won three of the four games they engaged in. "We played four games in less than two days," Ballijn. When the last game went into overtime, the boys were too exhausted to pull off an undefeated string, but they were still in first place. Ballijn said that team captain Danny Johnson had twisted an ankle in the third game, was transported to the hospital for treatment, and remained sidelined for the remainder of the tournament.
A cavalcade of cars with horns honking escorted the boys across the island for a victory lap around The Bottom.
