Mighty Tall Man wins road march

Story and photo by Suzanne Nielsen and reprinted with permission of the Daily Herald.

June 30, 2005

Mighty Tall Man (Karel Sorton) won the adult road march contest last Saturday night with "Keepin' da Spirit alive" at a precarnival contest at the Sports Field in The Bottom. Juvenile winner was Lady Els (Else Heyliger) with "Celebrating 30 years."

Other winners were Evy D (second place), Singin' Bob Morgan (third place), Singing Lorna, Budu Banton, and Super "T." Coming in second for the junior group was Cutie "E," and Lady Mich was third. Also participating were Miss J and Mighty Pressure. The Junior road march participants are scheduled to perform again during Carnival.

Music was provided by D.J. Z Brixx and DJ Kevin with St Maarten Band "Basis and Crew" on the stage.

Carnival Foundation Chairperson Cornelius Richardson said that it was a new idea to have the road march competition several weeks earlier than carnival itself, but this allowed the public to enjoy the music and build up the carnival excitement.

Richardson said that the next fundraiser will be a Bachata/Spanish dance contest on Sunday, July 10, from 6 to 10 pm at Sunny Valley Youth Center. Couples who wish to participate in the competition may register with Mirabelle at Midway
