Lost hiker's family and friends write to Sorton

Story and photo by Suzanne Nielsen and reprinted with permission of the Daily Herald.

January 22, 2007

Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton received Saturday the following letter signed by eight family members and friends of missing hiker Joel Gove. Sorton has authorized sharing its contents with The Daily Herald.

"Dear Lt. Governor Sorton: It is with sincerest gratitude and heartfelt thanks that we address this letter to you. In our continued efforts to find Joel, we know we cannot go another day without expressing how much we appreciate everything and all that you have done and are still doing for us.

"We are especially endeared to the people of Saba, who have treated us with kindness and kinship and have searched with us, side by side, for Joel. The manpower and hours of volunteering is without doubt the epitome of human understanding and camaraderie.

"At a time when there can be misunderstandings, misgivings and rumors, we feel it especially important to put into writing in a clear and purposeful manner and for all to see, that we are eternally indebted to the Government of Saba, the people which it protects and represents, and to you for embracing us in our time of distress.

"Respectfully, Family and Friends of Joel D. Gove."
