Chris Johnson and Bruce Zagers will be appointed Commissioners of Saba's new
Executive Council, which will be installed on July 2. The two biggest votegetters of
the April 20 Island Council Election were appointed during a meeting of the elected
Island Council members of the ruling Windward Island People's Movement (WIPM),
outgoing Commissioner Will Johnson announced on Tuesday.
Johnson said it had been agreed on earlier that the party's biggest votegetters
would receive the position of commissioner. WIPM won the election by a landslide, gathering four
of the five available seats. Chris Johnson was the party's biggest vote-getter with
120 votes. Bruce Zagers received 96 votes, Carl Buncamper 93 and number one
candidate Rolando Wilson 86 votes. Will Johnson said his son Chris would take over
as leader of government and would also take responsibility for the portfolios of
General and Constitutional Affairs and Education. Zagers will take on the portfolio
of Finance, among others.
The final division of portfolios will be officially established during the first
meeting of the newly elected Island Council, which will probably be held on July 4.
It was further decided that Chairman of the Central Committee Rolando Wilson, the
only member of the current Island Council who will be returning in the new council,
will retain his position as chairman of the Central Committee. Carl Buncamper will
be appointed vice-chairman, said Johnson.
The new commissioners will be updated on constitutional affairs in the next two
months and will be briefed on their portfolios by outgoing Commissioners Johnson and
Lisa Hassell. They will also be visiting the various insular departments.
