Jonathan Johnson, surrounded by family and friends, took the oath Friday
afternoon for the office of Acting Lt. Governor. He was preceded in the office by
his uncle, former commissioner Will Johnson. Will Johnson had to step down because
of a conflict of interest, as his son Chris is the new Commissioner. After Island
Secretary Menno van der Velde administered the oath in the Dutch language, Lt.
Governor Sydney Sorton handed him Johnson's official documents.
Johnson, who is
Director of Saba Comprehensive School, said he was confident that Sorton would be an
invaluable mentor and he would learn from Sorton's experience. Sorton is Saba's
longest- serving Lt. Governor. Johnson added that he looked up to former Governor of
the Netherlands Antilles Jaime Saleh and current Governor Frits Goedgedrag for their
leadership styles and devotion to country and Queen. Johnson finished his speech
with a toast to Queen Beatrix, and the assembly stayed to socialise after raising
their glasses to the new appointee.
