Robinson is Little Miss Saba

Story and photo by Suzanne Nielsen and reprinted with permission of the Daily Herald.

July 28, 2007

Gisela Robinson was chosen Little Miss Saba at Thursday evening's Carnival contest at the Sports Field in The Bottom.

Robinson also won the sash for Miss Popularity. Coming in first runner up was Jordan Every; second runner up was Charlene De Roche, who was also Miss Amity; third runner up was Hillary Zagers, and Jody Morgan was fourth runner and Miss Photogenic. All girls received trophies, special mementos from HES Home Centre, and Chippie phones from UTS. Additional prizes were a ticket for Gisela to Curaçao donated by Insel Air to Gisela, a trip to any Winair destination for Jordan.

Under the expert guidance of hosts Susie Guido and Pa Ben (Roland Bryson from St. Maarten,) the program started with the young ladies dressed in resort wear introducing themselves to a pack crowd and telling a bit about their interests and hobbies.

In the talent section, Hillary danced with an umbrella, Jordan, dressed in a sari, did an intricate Indian danced, Jody did a Surinamese folk dance dressed in Caribbean white and madras plaid, and Gisela was joined on stage by three of her sisters and cousins in a rousing carnival jump up number. Charlene took on the steel pan, and played "Mary Had a Little Lamb" which she had just learned. Motiance dancers from St. Maarten entertain the audience in between the various contest events.

The girls then came out one by one in bright carnival dress for the costume segment, and returned in evening dress for the finale, where they each answered a question about Saba's natural history. The judges then picked the winners, with the royal red robe and crown put around Gisela. Commissioner of Culture Bruce Zagers and Acting Lt. Governor Jonathan Johnson expressed congratulations.

From about 11:30pm until closing the program continued with various Calypso talents. The winners of the raffle were Sonia Richardson for the Winair ticket to St. Maarten, Gideon Wilson for a Chippie phone, and Saskia Levenston for a case of beer. The evening was organized by Bob Morgan and Alida Heilbron.
