Saba Carnival ends

Story and photo by Suzanne Nielsen and reprinted with permission of the Daily Herald.

August 1, 2007

The Sunday parade of costumed revellers, floats, thrown candy, and refreshments was the concluding event for this year's carnival.

The committee's intention was to shorten, but strengthen, the carnival by having it be only one week long and with a single weekend parade day. The cavalcade used the Medical School parking lot to get assembled at around 3pm and then did several laps around The Bottom, led by a police vehicle.

"Fusion Nation," put together by the Sea Fan Foundation, made a strong showing with a large group in well designed costumes sporting plenty of glitter, ropes of beads, and waving feathers. They were accompanied by the Small Axe band from St. Kitts. Clara Reyes, in a bright green outfight, had brought over her Imbali dancers, who did several different routines along the route. A group from St. Maarten joined in.

The other adult group was "Make Love not War" sponsored by Scout's Place. The float was the main attraction, with its 1970s theme carried out in peace symbols covered in glitter and a Karoke platform incorporated into the back of the truck. A special treat was the diffusion of bubbles off the back of the float.

A large children's contingent, put together by Maricelly Johnson, was the only children's group. About 25 young ladies were adorable in their butterfly outfits.

Saba University joined in with a decorated truck, highlighted with a plastic skeleton on the front bumper. The local Entyce Band supplied additional parade music.

The parade ended in the Sport Field where the revelry continued until King Momo was burned around midnight.
