Public meeting of the Island Council Saba convened for Tuesday morning

August 20, 2007

Saba News Agency

Chairman of the Island Council of Saba, Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton has convened a public meeting of the Island Council of Saba for Tuesday, August 21st 2007 at 10.00 a.m. at the Government Administration Building in the Courtroom.

This meeting has been requested by the leader of the opposition Saba Labor Party Ms. Akilah Levenstone. The agenda for the meeting is as follows: 1. Opening, 2. Status of negotiations on Constitutional Affairs, 3. Financial supervision and debt relief, 4. Retraction EV ab. No. 1-9, 5. Closing.

Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton has placed one extra point to the agenda "retracting EV Ab. No. 1-9". This agenda point has to do with the annual reports of the Island Territory of Saba which was approved in the Island Council meeting of June 28th 2007. Reliable sources told SNA that this point had to be added as the previous Island Council consisting of Will Johnson, Lisa Hassell and Rolando Wilson had approved the annual accounts from 1998 until 2006 without having them sent up first to the General Auditing Committee (Algemene Rekenkamer). This is not in keeping with article 45 of the Compatibility regulations of eh island Territories.

Reliable sources told us that this was a blunder that the previous Island Council made at their last public meeting of the Island Council. Our source told us that it is left to be seen if the Island Secretary would now come under fire during the meeting for having the annual accounts sent to the Island Council for approval without them first being controlled by the General Auditing committee. Our source told us that they consider this to be a major blunder on the part of the island Secretary as he should have known better to have those annual accounts sent to the Island council for approval without having them controlled. Our source said that the island Secretary should have known better as he worked at the General auditing committee and should have known the rules and regulations. This matter should be considered as an embarrassment for the island Territory to have made such a blunder.

The general public of Saba is hereby cordially invited to attend Tuesday's public Island Council meeting as this will be the first public debate on the floor of the Island Council ever since the new council took their oath of office on July 2nd 2007.

Leader of the opposition Ms. Akilah Levenstone said that she is looking forward to a fruitful debate on the matters in order to get some clarity from the Executive Council on the issues that she has requested. I hope that we will be able to discuss the matters in a mature manner.
