bron The Daily Herald

SABA--Minister of Transport and Communications Maurice Adriaens paid a visit to Saba on Monday for a meeting with Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton. Constitutional matters and telecommunications issues were part of their discussions. The activities preformed by Bureau of Telecommunications and Post (BTP) and the possible role in the future of the BES islands were also a point of discussion.

Besides the abovementioned points, the tremors felt Thursday and Friday on Saba was also an important agenda point. Key information received from the Metrological Service of the Netherlands Antilles (METEO), the Metrological Service of the Netherlands KNMI and information received from the University of the West Indies (UWI) has been exchanged. The Minister and the Lt. Governor share the same view that communication and exchange of data is vital when such natural events take place, it was stated. According to both offi - cials, it is essential to setup a committee consisting of members of METEO, KNMI, UWI and even the Metrological Service of Puerto Rico to analyse and advise on how to deal with such natural events. Adriaens also visited Saba Telecommunications company Satel. The Minister received information about Satel from new director Jennifer Zagers. Telecommunications elements like quality, fees, movements of competitors, and the introduction of new technologies were the main points of discussion. Zagers also brought forward some bottlenecks that Satel is confronting. Besides advising on how to deal with some of the bottlenecks, the Minister did order BTP to immediately conduct some investigation and research.

As mentioned during Adriaens' visit to the telecommunications companies on St. Maarten in November 2007, conducting direct and frequently communication with the telecom organizations within the Netherlands Antilles form an integral aspect in his policy. "It is a key element in dealing with the moving and constant changing telecommunications market," he said. Due to bad weather Minister Adriaens could not visit St. Eustatius and Eutel as planned on Monday. He will conduct this visit shortly. During his visit to Saba, Minister Adriaens was accompanied by Director of BTP Joao da Canha.
