Dutch photojournalist Jochem Wijnands is on a half-year assignment documenting
all six Dutch Antillean islands for the Dutch language version of National
Geographic magazine Wijnands said that National Geographic is working on a major
story to be published in November.
The article will portray life on the islands and
how it might be affected by the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles. The feature
is expected to be about 30 pages and will cover the six islands involved in the
constitutional changes. Wijnands said that the magazine wants to capture what it
sees as an historic moment in eyewitness accounts. His photos will also be used for
individual island stories, which will appear in National Geographic Traveler. A
print journalist will be writing the text that will accompany Wijnands' photos.
Wijnands came to Saba to cover the visit of Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter
Balkenende. He arrived a few days in advance and has already made numerous contacts
on the island and did a lot of photography. He will return at the end of the month
for about 10 days to continue his work.
He will be bringing his young family with
him, he said, as this is the only way he can keep close to them on such a long
assignment.
