Saba flowers available as postage stamps

Story and photo by Suzanne Nielsen and reprinted with permission of the Daily Herald.

February 14, 2007

Saba flowering plants are now available as US postage stamps over the Internet.

The photos of Saba's flowering plants were taken by The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) photographer Carol Gracie, who was part of the NYBG team taking an inventory of the island's flora for a Virtual Herbarium website.

Gracie said that at Christmas time she was searching for special stamps for her own holiday greeting cards and found http://www.zazzle.com, which will print official US postage stamps using private photos. The customized stamps are a new offering from the United States Postal Service and are legal for postage mailed within the United States. The website has an offering of customized items such as t-shirts, mugs, and other items which can be personalized with one's own photo or greeting.

Gracie's Saba photos are available as first-class US postage stamps with a face a value of 41 cents and a sheet of 20 stamps costs $20. Although the stamps cannot be used on Saba, many Sabans live in the United States or have their correspondence posted there and could use the stamps.

Gracie's Saba shots include landscapes of Windwardside and the Sandy Cruz trail and eight flowers, including bromeliads, cactus, and the black-eyed Susan, the island's national flower. The images are also available as note cards with envelopes.

To locate Gracie's work on "Zazzle," fill in "Carol Gracie" in the search window.
