Scout's Place staged a mock rainforest wedding for a German film production crew Friday afternoon. The final result will be shown to two million German television viewers.
The production company, "Weltrekord-TV" is run by David Vehreschild from Düsseldorf. He is accompanied by soundman Gerd Müller and videographer André Zschocke, both from Berlin. Vehreschild said that he specializes in travel documentaries and has done at least 25 stories on the Caribbean, always hoping that Saba would come up as an assignment. He scoured the Internet and came across Scout's Place, so now additionally he can weave into his documentary the drama of a young German couple setting up a business on Saba. He contacted owners Wolfgang and Barbara Tooten, who set up all arrangements for the film crew to come.
Scout's Place dive operation, Saba Divers, was filmed underwater with Wolfgang and Barbara diving together. On Friday afternoon, a mock wedding ceremony took place in a secluded grove of huge trees not far from Rendez-Vous, off Mountain Road. With Scout's Place employees as bride and groom stand-ins, and Canadian trail workers as "witnesses," the fake marriage took place. The only real things about it were the presence of the Civil Registrar Juliette Woods, who conducted the service attired in her robe of office, the bride's bouquet and floral decorations by Glenn Holm, and the Black Forest wedding cake, that was quickly devoured by the entire crew when the "service" was over.
Friday evening, the film crew turned out for the evening Sabaoke event that takes place weekly at Scout's Place restaurant. Saturday was reserved for some parting shots of the spectacular Winair landing at Flat Point. The film concentrates on the Scout's Place operation, with lots of atmosphere shots of the entire island and its culture.
Vehreschild said that he definitely found Saba special, after just coming from the congestion and overbuilds on St. Maarten and the BVI. The Saba document will be one-half of a 25-minute program to be shown on Germany's Voxtours television, which has a travel show every Saturday around 5pm.
