A delegation from the Immigration and Naturalization Department in the Netherlands
visited Saba on Tuesday and held discussions and a presentation for several
stakeholders on the island in regards to the new procedures in obtaining the Dutch
nationality.
Lt. Governor of Saba, Mr. Sydney Sorton told SNA that the discussions and
presentation was carried out so that those persons on Saba that will be working with
the new procedures will be well aware of the new rules and regulations. The new
procedures in obtaining the Dutch nationality will go into effect as of August 1st
2008. Persons will have to undergo a oral and written examination and the results of
the examination will be then sent on to the Netherlands. If the applicant qualifies
they will have to attend a ceremony on the island in which they will also have to
take an oath to the queen. Attending the meeting with the delegation from the
Netherlands were Mr. Franklin Wilson, Ms. Nellie Peterson, Mrs. Patricia Linzey, Mr.
Emeal Simmons, Mrs. Marva Donker and Ms. Julietta Woods. The stakeholders that will
be involved with the examination are all civil servants and is attached to the
following departments, Census Office, Immigration Department, Lt. Governor's Office,
Department of Education and the Island Secretariat.
Lt. Governor Sorton mentioned that the new procedure will be completely new and
based on the new information our stakeholders needed to obtain the necessary
explanations from the experts. We were all happy to have been able to receive the
necessary information. the delegation that visited Saba were Director IND, Mr. L.
Severijnen, head of the Center for Knowledge, Advice and Development Unit Identity
and Document Investigation Mr. J. de Jong, the unit manager Mr. Rico Pieterse and
the senior policy adviser Mrs. Johanna Brand. During the meeting and presentation
Mr. Franklin Wilson also delivered a presentation to the Dutch visiting delegation.
