Curacao Sport Federation showes interest in assisting Saba

On Tuesday morning two representatives from the Curacao Sports Federation visited the island of Saba and held discussions with several entities on the island in regards to sports. Mr. Stanley Marks and Roxienne Albertina held discussions with Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton and Commissioner of Sports Mr. Bruce Zagers. Following their meeting with the members of the Executive Council they also held discussions with several representatives of sports on the island.

Ms. Albertina met with the various representatives and first of all pointed out to them the urgency to establish a Sports Federation on the island. She explained that there is lots of possibilities for Saba by setting up a Sports Federation and the island will be able to participate in all activities that revolves around sports. The representatives of the various sporting organizations explained the problems that the island has been encountering with several sporting activities on the island and also pointed out the small scale of players on the island, however she did encourage the organizations to try and do everything possible to establish a sporting federation on the island, and if their federation can be of any assistance to please feel free and call on the them as they are willing to assist the island in setting up a good functioning federation.

Members of the various sporting organizations in attendance also brought forward that there is an urgent need to have a sports coordinator appointed on the island that would be able to assist in the area of sports at this present time every organization is doing their own thing and nothing is structured. Also attending the meeting with the sporting organizations were Commissioner of Sports Mr. Bruce Zagers who also encouraged the organization to follow up on the establishing of the federation on the island and said that he is presently working with Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton as representative of the CUS to see how they would be able to go about finding a suitable candidate to take on the task as Sports Coordinator. Commissioner Zagers said that he is very much interested in sports and he would do his utmost best to try and get this matter solved as soon as possible as he know the benefit that a good sports coordinator can have for the island.

The future of sports was also discussed after the Netherlands Antilles splits up on December 15th 2008 and how the islands will continue forward as there wont be anymore Netherlands Antilles. Further discussions regarding this will take place at a later date due to the fact that it is not clear yet how this will be taken up in the new status of the respective islands. It was pointed out though that although the islands are breaking up as a country that does not mean that we still cannot do things together as the Dutch Caribbean islands.

The representatives of the sporting organizations on the island was very pleased with the discussions held and are looking forward in some follow up. They represented Cricket, Domino, Basket Ball, Baseball, Soccer, Softball and Swimming. Due to the short notice many other sporting organizations were unable to attend the meeting. The delegation left Saba on Tuesday afternoon for St. Maarten where they willb e also meeting with representives of sporting organization on that island and is also scheduled to travel to St. Eustatius on Wednesday.
