The Bottom, Saba: Motorists on Saba were very much surprised on Monday morning to know
that the price of gasoline and diesel were increased. There was no prior notification
that the prices would increase from one day to the other.
In a public notice released on Monday it states that the Executive Council of the
island territory of Saba would hereby like to inform the general public that due to
the rising oil prices in 2008, the supplier of oil products was forced to raise its
prices due to the higher acquisition costs. As of May 12th 2008 the price at the
pump in Saba will be as follows: Unleaded gasoline will be Fls. 2.41 per litre,
Gasoil/Diesel will be Fls. 2.30 per liter.
Many on Saba are now starting to wonder how they are going to survive with the
increase of fuel once again as everyone can expect the cost for electricity and
everything else will also increase.
Leader of the Democratic Party of Saba, Mr. Dave Levenstone said that it is becoming
very hard already for people to survive. Just last week I wrote a letter to the
Commissioner of Economic affairs Mr. Chris Johnson pointing out to him that
something has to be done where the cost of living on Saba is concerned. I must
admit that the Commissioner has taken the matter very serious and he intends to look
into some formula to see how the community of Saba could get some sort of relief.
Levenstone said that he realizes that there is not much government can do at this
time because it is a world-wide problem, but there should be something that
government can do to help out.
Levenstone said that in his letter he informed the Commissioner that the matter of
the high cost of living on the island cannot be blamed on anyone in particular but
government needs to at least form a task force to look into the matter as soon as
possible. People are barely making ends meet now, I also pointed out to the
Commissioner that this matter demands that all political parties should come
together and come up with some fast solutions. With the increase of fuel on the
island I hope that this does not cause a total close down on the community. There
has to be a way in which government can assist somewhere.
