Former Commissioner Peter Granger bids farewell to Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton

July 2, 2008

bron Saba News Agency

Former Island Council member and Commissioner Peter Granger on Tuesday afternoon bid farewell to Lt. Governor Sydney Sorton at a farewell party in honor of Mr. Sorton at the Hon. Henry Every Old Age Home in the presence of the senior citizens and family members of Mr. Sorton. This event was organized by Ms. Cassandra Wilson and the staff of the home.

Mr. Granger served on the Executive Council together with Mr. Sorton when he was first appointed Lt. Governor of Saba in 1989. Mr. Granger said that I had the distinguish honor to have served with Mr. Sorton when he was first appointed in the Executive Council and also in the Island Council and I have always known him to be a honest man and a man of integrity. I have enjoyed working with him during my period and we worked very close. I was also one of those that recommended him at the time to then Prime Minister Mrs. Maria Liberia Peters to become Lt. Governor of Saba. I am so happy to know that he has served our little island for the past 11 years and three months making him the longest serving Lt. Governor of the island. Mr. Sorton as you join me now in retirement I say to you that you have served with dignity and you must be remembered for your good work for our little island. You have been a role model for many and I want to wish you all the best in whatever you plan to do now that you are retiring from public service.

Lt. Governor Sorton said that he was honored to have served the island as Lt. Governor and being able to work with persons like Mr. Granger. I really enjoyed serving my native island and I have no regrets whatsoever at this stage, I have tried to serve the island to the best of my ability. I will be retiring from public service but I will be always available to assist whenever called upon to serve in any other capacity on behalf of the island. I will be leaving the island for a short vacation but do intend to return after all I was born on this island and still feels that I can make my contribution for the future development of the island. For me it is farewell as Lt. Governor but I will be still around God spares my life to help my little island, a proud and satisfied Sydney Sorton said on Tuesday afternoon.
