Saba Day packed with entertainment

December 3, 2008

bron The Daily Herald - More news www.thedailyherald.com

All preparations for the 33rd Saba Day celebrations are just about completed. Saba Day celebrations will begin on Friday, December 5, with the ringing of church bells at 6:00am. Commissioner of Culture Bruce Zagers said this year's celebrations promise to be one of the best ever.

The official programme begins with an ecumenical service at the Seventh Day Adventist Mount Scenery Church in The Bottom. Immediately after, there will be a procession to the Government Administration building where the Saba flag will be hoisted, the national anthem sung, and elected officials will be giving speeches.

The official ceremony will continue at the Lt. Governor's residence for a free reception. Guests will be treated to an assortment of food, drinks and entertainment by Saba's Occasionals Band.

Saba Day revellers can look forward to one of the biggest concerts of the year to be held on Friday evening. Entyce Band will get the party started at the newly renovated Juliana Sports Field in The Bottom. Also performing will be Youth Waves from St. Maarten. Contrary to what was previously stated, this will not be a free concert. There will be a small entrance fee levied, and food and drinks will be on sale.

A one-day Wahoo Trolling Tournament will be held on Saturday, December 6, starting at 3:00am at Fort Bay Harbour. Commissioner Zagers said he expects this to be one of the most popular activities. Participation commitments have already been made by several boats from Saba, St. Maarten and Statia.

Other weekend activities include target shooting, a kite competition and different athletic competitions. There will also be games for children at the Saba Museum grounds in Windwardside.

At the Harbour there will be several booths serving local specialties as well as refreshments. Entertainment will be provided by several local DJs as well as the Rebels Band from Statia and the Entyce Band.

Commissioner Zagers said that the weekend will be "jam packed" with activities and entertainment "that will surely satisfy everyone's entertainment needs."

All weekend activities will be organized by the Saba Cultural Committee. Zagers said that he is grateful for their hard work and determination. "Organizing such events is no easy task but they have proven that they are up to the challenge and will ensure that persons will be treated to the highest quality entertainment during Saba Day weekend," said Zagers.

Zagers went on to say that he is very grateful for all the sponsors. "Without their support we would not be able to offer such high quality entertainment."

For more information about the activities, persons can find the official schedule at most grocery stores on the island as well as on the website: www.sabatourism.com.
