Chantalle Pierre has been recognized as employee of the year 2008 by Scout's Place owner/operators Wolfgang and Barbara Tooten.
Tooten organized the annual event about five years ago to recognize employees' loyalty to carrying out Scout's excellent customer service standards.
Chantalle, who came to Saba about 16 years ago from Haiti, joined Scout's Place in 2002. She has two children and is married to the well-known rockwork artisan, Antoine Pierre.
Chantalle proved her versatility-so necessary in a small boutique establishment like Scout's-by helping in the kitchen, the restaurant, and in the hotel. Chantalle now is in the kitchen for breakfast and lunch. "I love working at Scout's, the bosses are very friendly," Chantalle commented.
Tooten told the story of a local man who recently called Chef Chantalle out from the kitchen to his table. He had ordered the "Caribbean Breakfast" of salt fish, salad on the side, and Johnnycakes. He exclaimed, "This is the best Caribbean breakfast I have ever had: the Johnnycakes are better than croissants!" High praise indeed, coming from a local connoisseur!
Chantalle also prepares a "Spanish breakfast" which is a huge omelette with onions, ham, cheese, and so forth. "After you have one, it's time for a nap," said Tooten. Naturally, menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner have a variety of specials and à la carte items.
Chantalle was awarded her certificate of merit at a recent holiday party for all staff, family, and friends of Scout's held at Cove Bay. She received two nights' stay for two donated by Holland House in Philipsburg, and two ferry tickets and some shopping cash from Scout's. Chantalle said that she had not yet taken her trip, but is looking forward to planning it in the near future.
