March 5, 2009

bron The Daily Herald

PHILIPSBURG - The global economic crisis and its effects on the Netherlands Antilles, criminality and constitutional affairs will be discussed with the Executive and Island Councils today by Governor Frits Goedgedrag and Prime Minister Emily de Jongh-Elhage.

Goedgedrag and de Jongh-Elhage are on a working visit to Saba, Statia and St. Maarten. The visit ends here Friday with tours of a school and housing projects and a meeting with environmental groups. The two Central Government officials will have lunch aboard a cruise ship and be part of the pile driving ceremony for the new "down street jetty."

Commenting on today's meetings, Constitutional Affairs Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams said government also wants to discuss the November 24, 2008 Political Accord that outlines migration of personnel of the Central Government to the Island Council and transfer of authorities such as the police force.

Government also wants to talk about the new immigration system being installed in the Antilles. "We are to take over this task soon [July 1] and should get involved with it," the commissioner said.

Also on the visiting officials' agenda for today are a meeting with Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards, visit to Emilio Wilson Park/Estate and a drive through tour of the hotel area of Mullet Bay/Cupecoy
