"Change is in the Air" - El Momo goes 100% smoke-free July 31, 2007 - El Momo will become the first 100% smoke-free hotel on Saba. El Momo is dedicated to provide a clean, comfortable and relaxing environment for its guests. The hotel's new policy is a result from guests expressing a clear demand for a healthy, smoke-free hotel experience. Introducing a smoke-free policy is a natural evolution for the hotel which also follows an eco-friendly philosophy. Our goal is to provide a place where guests can relax and restore their mind, body and spirit in a healthy way. At El Momo we strive that our guests walk out feeling better than they did when they arrived.
Industry research, as well as our own experience, confirmed a clear consumer demand for a clean, smoke free hotel environment. El Momo's staff will benefit enormously from this effort to improve the quality of life rather than being required to enter smoke-filled rooms, experiencing holey sheets, burned matresses, stinky ashtrays, smelly rooms, curtains and walls. No employees should be required to risk their good health for the sake of their jobs. Secondhand smoke toxins and residue can stay in fabrics anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of months after initial exposure, even after they have been washed.
Like the airlines, we hope it will one day be possible for all hotels to be smoke-free. We felt it was not enough to simply limit the number of smoking rooms, or designate smoking areas. We believe the best experience for our guests is a hotel that is completely smoke-free.
The new policy will be active from January 1st 2008. El Momo website

New Tax Initiatives April 10, 2007 - New Tax Initiatives between the U.S. and the Netherlands Antilles mean good news for meetings and convention planners. The agreement allows U.S. taxpayers to claim a tax deduction for expenses associated with a convention held in the Netherlands Antilles to the same extent as a convention held in the US. The implementation of the Tax Information Exchange Agreement means that the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles -- Bonaire; Curacao; Saba; St. Eustatius; and St. Maarten -- are considered part of the North American area. (Aruba had previously been considered part of the Netherlands Antilles until 1986 when it was granted a "status apart" and became a separate part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.) Expenses incurred while attending conventions, business meetings and seminars on the five islands are allowed as deductions according to the same regulations as if each of the five islands were a U.S. territory.

Hot News at El Momo! January 11, 2007 - El Momo upgraded all bathrooms and equiped them with electric instant showers. In order to keep water and power consumption low each bathroom has it's own heater. Installation close to the point of use avoids the otherwise inevitable loss of heat from the hot water pipes of a centralized facility. Electricity is only used while showering. The new showers are high quality made-in-Germany products and equiped with easy-to-use electronic stepless rotary temperature selector, safety device and build in ELCB protector (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker).
Of course our popular solar showers are still available, but in case of less sunshine now we have an additional choice and hot water is 100% guaranteed. The moon was never working to full satisfaction, so now also early morning showers can be hot. More information email info@elmomo.com. El Momo website

This year, more Asian properties were selected than in past years, and a lesser-known island, Saba, makes its debut as the best island in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas." More>>

Sea & Learn on Saba Looking to book a trip this fall and need inspiration or justification?
From the sky to the ocean floor and all that is between, Sea & Learn on Saba
invites you to explore nature and enhance your environmental awareness.
Saba, a tiny Caribbean island just 28 miles from St. Maarten offers a unique
annual event: Sea & Learn on Saba. Saba, known as 'The Unspoiled Queen,'
is proud of its nature and preservation efforts. During October, a variety
of naturalists, scientists and academics in fields ranging from sharks and
frogfish to hummingbirds and orchids, provide casual but informative
multimedia presentations. Interested parties are invited to join
field/research projects or assist in nature surveys conducted throughout the
event.
Whether your reason to visit Saba is hiking, diving or just relaxing, the
timing of the daily Sea & Learn events is scheduled to allow visitors and
locals alike to enjoy their day on Saba. A 'happy hour' environment is
provided at different venues so that dinner plans are easily accommodated
after the nightly session. Field and research project scheduling varies and
will be announced in advance.
Sea & Learn on Saba is a non-profit foundation. The month-long event is
sponsored by island and regional businesses. All events are open to the
public and free of charge. Recognizing that the key to sustaining Saba's
unique environment, as well as other habitats in the world, lies in the
hands of future generations, invited nature experts also conduct projects
and presentations for Saba's youth. To learn more about the event, its

Saba Divers offers "Nitrox for free" diving April 1, 2004 - It won't get any cheaper ;-) Saba Divers professional Dive Center on Saba launched its new "Nitrox for free!"* Program earlier this month. From now on diving with the most popular Nitrox 32 blend is "for free", means: with no extra charge compared to compressed air for all certified Nitrox divers. This is not only NEW this is a sensation in the world of diving and it's the first time introduced in the Caribbean.
We found out that most of divers didn't dive Nitrox for financial reasons. So they couldn't get what Nitrox has to offer for their health and safety. Therefore Barbara & Wolfgang Tooten, Owners & Managing Directors of Saba Divers & Scout's Place Hotel, Bar & Restaurant thought it is time to change this. They have teamed up with Germany's No. 1 Nitrox agency NRC & the world largest certification agency PADI to offer Nitrox32 for free! They have upgraded their Nitrox system with one of the most sophisticated Nitrox membranes and compressors you can get worldwide right now.
Would you still buy a car without an airbag? No! So why dive without Nitrox? Especially when it is for free!
The professional dive center also offers very reasonable prices for becoming a certified Nitrox diver in a day or two. On certification you can dive for the rest of you stay "Nitrox for free"! Dive clubs, tour operator, groups or individual travelers? No problem! Everybody is welcome on this program. Check it out and benefit from this great offer whenever you're ready to dive in Saba's beautiful and protected Marine Park. Saba's Eco-Image Takes Next Step: Green Hotels September 25, 2003 - with a nickname like "The Unspoiled Queen", Saba has much to live up to. In October 2003, Saba will "notch up" once more with an island-wide campaign to become the first Caribbean island with 100% green hotels.
Inspired by their own efforts in creating and refurbishing cottages that are eco-friendly, El Momo Cottages proprietor Angelika Hartleib (pictured above with husband Ollie and children), took the initiative to make all hotels on Saba green. Not painting the hotels, but obtaining the training and technical expertise to ensure social responsibility as well as environmental care for the benefit of the Saba community and its visitors.
Now that the paper work and bureaucratic channels have been cleared, Mrs. Hartleib will be the moderator of the program. In cooperation with the Caribbean Hotel Association's division known as CAST (Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism), the Saba Hotel Association and individual hotel managers will meet and work with consultants and technical advisors to obtain these goals.
Many hotels and households on Saba already practice green ideas with recycling and management of precious rainwater and simple but effective sewage systems. Watch for more news updates as the program progresses on www.seasaba.com.
