SCF reintroduces Guide Hikes with James "Crocodile" Johnson
January 7, 2012 - Guided hikes with James Johnson were very popular in the past, but due to his prolonged absence, there has not been a regular schedule for a while.

However, we are happy to report that "Guided Hikes" are back every Wednesdays and Fridays, starting at 8:00 AM.

Special hikes (e.g. for divers or private parties and groups) can be arranged on other weekdays. Sign-up sheets and liability release forms are available at the Saba Tourist Bureau. More>>.

Exhibition: Antique Bibles and Books
December 16, 2011 - Dutch antiquities are exhibited in a cottage in Windwardside

After having presented the antique tiles from 1600-1800 with biblical and other scenes, an exhibition of 8 bibles and 40 books in parchment and leather from between 1640 and 1777 can be seen from the 24th of December until the 3rd of January.

Opening hours: between 10:00 - 12:00 and between 14:00 - 16:00, every day also in weekends. Entrance fee: $ 1

The ambiance is a renovated cottage in Windwardside (just above Juliana''s hotel) that is furnished with antiquities in a typical Dutch style (one room mainly 17th and two other rooms 18 th century).

René Caderius van Veen moved his collections from the Netherlands to Saba and actually the exhibitions are in the cottage where he lives.

Tapas at Tropics Café
December 10, 2011 - Tropics Café has added a special Tapas menu to their Sunday happy hour from 4 till 6 pm. One can now spend a Sunday afternoon pool side, enjoying a variety of tapas, bottomless sangria and 2 for 1 beers. Rodrigo Sanchez, the new chef from El Salvador will change the tapas menu weekly, so there will always be something new and special to look forward to.

Unfortunately, Tropics Café has stopped its "Grill Nights" on Wednesday and Sundays evenings, but will continue "Movie Night" on Fridays. "Queen of New York Hearts" Honeymoon Special to Saba

Saba Has a New Spa!
April 20, 2011 - Opened in April 2011 by Terry Chretien and Michael Dance, 13-year owners of Ambrosia Body Care in St. Croix, USVI, Saba's Spa offers specialized massage and spa treatments utilizing locally found food-grade ingredients.

Saba's lush rainforest flora as well as local farmers and gardeners provide many healing botanicals for use in skin care treatments. Plants such as Saba Spice Bush, Foeniculum vulgare, are not only used in medicinal tonics by some locals, but the essential oil is a wonderful skin tonic, is great for puffy eyes as it can reduce water retention and may also help to minimize wrinkles and maintain elasticity of the skin and muscle tone beneath the skin.

Shipping Advice for Customs - Dawn II & Saba C-Transport, N.V
March 27, 2011 - In an effort to ease the process of picking up your shipments from the DAWN II at Fort Bay, here are some suggestions to follow:

Please be at the dock NO later than 7:00 pm so that you may present your invoices to the Customs officers and pay any taxes applicable. Please note that the Customs container closes at 8:00 pm.

Please advise the merchant in Sint Maarten to print two copies and send it with the items. If you would like, you can also ask the merchant to send you the invoice in advance.

It must be an invoice with the price of the goods, not just a packing slip. Please be advised that shipments without pricing listed will be held by customs until an invoice with pricing is submitted.

Be prepared to pay or complete a Declaration of Debt for any ABB tax, if applicable.

Any items not picked up by 8pm on the days of travel (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) will be held by Customs.

Please note that the Customs container does not have any cold storage capabilities.

Saba Divers & Scout's Place Hotel at The Boat Show 2011
December 31, 2010 - As every year Saba Divers & Scout's Place Hotel will attend for the 10th times the world largest water sports fair "The Boat Show 2011" in Duesseldorf, Germany. The show open its doors on January 22 and runs until January 30th. For this year's fair staff of Saba Divers took time to document the underwater world around Saba by taking great underwater photos and together with pictures of the hotel, restaurant, Saba villages and their friendly people created a exciting video presentation for the well attended show in Germany and tour operators and visitors alike. Approximatly 250,000 visitors from more than 60 nations have visited the show last year and diving attracts many of those visitors. It is a great opportunity to promote the product and the island itself to the German, Dutch, Belgium, Austria & Swiss market. Also interested parties from former east European countries are on the increase. In recent years Saba Divers & Scout's Place were nominated and awarded several times precious dive awards during the show for their great service and hospitality. Eventually Saba has a new Saba Idol 2010
December 21, 2010 - Micheline Hinse from The Netherlands won the precious award, held on a yearly basis at Scout's Place Hotel. Micheline convinced with her outstanding performance and singing skills. It was fun for all guests, divers, locals and other vistors on Saba. Especially her final performance of "All that Jazz" got the crowd on to their chairs. First runner up came Felix Mateo of the Domenican Republic. himself a Scout's Place waiter and our own local girl Sheritsa Oleana. All contestents deserve a big round of applause for their great committment and performances. We are looking forward to a great show of the 8th Saba Idol competition in 2011.

Curaçao and St Maarten become autonomous countries as part of the Dutch Kingdom. And Saba, Statia and Bonaire continue as municipalities of the Netherlands.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food (LNV) have taken this occasion to produce a special issue of Change Magazine (www.changemagazine.nl/bes). The magazine covers a broad range of surrounding the delicate biodiversity on the islands. The difficult relation between economy and ecology ;the threat and chances of tourism ; the search for balance in the relation nature and tourism ; fishery; the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as an economic tool to let ecology flourish ; the protection of the sea - it's fish, fishermen, coral and many hidden secrets.

Saba (SBA) & Statia Business Associations (STEBA) meet
June 9, 2010 - Representatives of the Saba (SBA) & Statia Business Associations (STEBA) met on Saba with the Executive Council & each other to discuss the setup of a joined chamber of commerce for both islands. Both associations presented each two names for the work group and first board of a Chamber of Commerce. In the near future this work group will start with the preparations of the new chamber and will discuss the set up with the secretary general of the ministry of economic affairs. The work group will also prepare for the first elections of a chamber board for the year 2011. The associations discussed several issues and visions of the future development of Saba's and Statia's economy. Furthermore both entities agree on a closer working relationship.

Antique Inn renovation
December 13, 2009 - The historical Antique Inn is currently being renovated. The Antique Inn property was privately owned by one of the Simmons families. Around the end of the 19th century the Government decided to purchase it as the residence for the Lt. Governor and his office was also in the building downstairs.

In the ninteen twenties Governor W.F.M. Lampe purchased the home of his father-in-law Capt. Thomas C. Vanterpool for the home of the Lt. Governor. He also purchased the property next to the new home of the Lt. Governor which when the old house was torn down became the Queen Wilhelmina Park.

The former home and office of the Lt. Governor was turned into a Passangrahan. That is the Indonesian word for Passing Big Shot. It served to accomodate Government officials visiting Saba from Curacao and the other Dutch islands and also the occasional writer or tourist would be housed there. The Public Library in The Bottom was housed in the downstairs room which formerly had served as the office of the Lt. Governor. Much later the place now known as Scouts Place was also purchased by the Government as a Passangrahan for Windwardside.

In 1971 the Passangrahan in The Bottom was leased to the late Mr. Clinton Cranston who renamed it The Antique Inn. After he died the building was put up for auction though it remains in the hands of the Island Government of Saba.

The old building has now been given a new lease on life by Mr. Henk Wolf. There are negotiations going on with the Dutch Government to turn it into the new regional service center, to reflect the new role which the Dutch Government will play after 1910 when they take over all the tasks which should have been the responsibility of the Government of The Netherlands Antilles headquartered in Willemstad. Scout's Place 6th annual Saba Idol Competition
September 12, 2009 - Scout's Place will host the 6th annual Saba Idol Competition, starting Friday 11, 2009. As every year the contestants have to qualify over a period of 8 weeks (3x2 songs and one additional performance) for the Semi Finals and finals in November.

This is an exiting event which is integrated in the weekly Sabaoke night. The Edge revised schedule
September 8, 2009 - During the month of September the "Edge" ferry will be running on its low season schedule to Saba, The Edge will only call on Saba on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The regular service is expected to resume in October.

"The World" makes its inaugural visit to Saba
January 6, 2009 - The tourist office had it's initial contact with the ship's head office in Miramar Florida about a year and a half ago, and "The World" finally made it's inaugural visit to Saba on January 6th. The World is a floating residential community owned by its residents. The residents, currently from 40 different countries, live on board as the ship slowly circumnavigates the globe.

Of the 157 residents and guests on board approximately 90 came ashore on Saba to sightsee, dive and do some hiking. The Executive Council, harbor officials and Director of Tourism took the opportunity to visit the ship and officially welcome them to Saba. The feedback from the guests who visited the island was positive and they hoped they would return to the island some day for a longer visit. The ship departed the same evening for St. Croix.

Wi-Fi now available throughout Saba
January 5, 2009 - Saba now has island-wide Wi-Fi internet access. Local provider Saba Telephone Company - SATEL - is offering three pre-paid cards - US$5 (one hour), US$15 (ten hours) and US$45 (50 hours). Cards can be purchased in Windwardside at Unique Store and Saba's Treasure and in The Bottom - at the Satel NV office.

November 17, 2007 - bron Dave Levenstone/Saba News Agency : On Wednesday afternoon the American Consul General stationed on Curacao Mr. Timothy J. Dunn while visiting the island of Saba made a specialpresentation to the the Manager of the Saba Marine Park and the Saba ConservationFoundation, Mr. Jan den Dulk at the Government Administration Building. The special presentation was done in the form of a plaque and it read as follows:Certificate of Appreciation awarded to Mr. Jan den Dulk and the Saba ConservationFoundation in recognition of your efforts and assistance in helping American citizens and their families. Thank you for your leadership and dedication. The Consul General said that seeing that he was on the island he felt it a must tothank the Saba Marine Park for their assistance with the search for the two American citizens that went missing on the island.

Spirit Airlines non-stop to Sint Maarten
May 10, 2007 - Spirit Airlines launched its year-round, nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to St. Maarten on an Airbus A319 aircraft christened "The Spirit of St. Maarten/Martin." The flights depart Fridays through Sundays at 11 a.m. from Fort Lauderdale and arrive in St. Maaarten at 1:50 p.m. The return leg leaves St. Maarten at 2:40 p.m., arriving in Fort Lauderdale at 5:55 p.m.

New Tax Initiatives
April 10, 2007 - New Tax Initiatives between the U.S. and the Netherlands Antilles mean good news for meetings and convention planners. The agreement allows U.S. taxpayers to claim a tax deduction for expenses associated with a convention held in the Netherlands Antilles to the same extent as a convention held in the US. The implementation of the Tax Information Exchange Agreement means that the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles -- Bonaire; Curacao; Saba; St. Eustatius; and St. Maarten -- are considered part of the North American area. (Aruba had previously been considered part of the Netherlands Antilles until 1986 when it was granted a "status apart" and became a separate part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.) Expenses incurred while attending conventions, business meetings and seminars on the five islands are allowed as deductions according to the same regulations as if each of the five islands were a U.S. territory.

The Star Clipper was in port
February 20, 2007 - The Star Clipper was in port yesterday Sunday February 19th with 135 passengers on board. It was a beautifully calm and sunny day and the visitors enjoyed island excursions, hiking etc. Star Clipper hopes to return in 2 weeks, weather permitting.
