Pop's Place owner wins 2012 Saba Idol Finals
December 1, 2012 - By Xallers on November 27, 2012

The winner of the ninth annual Saba Idol competition was crowned at Scout's Place restaurant in Windwardside on Friday night. The honours went to Alphonso Colmenares, in daily life the owner of Pop's Place in Fort Bay harbour. Originally from Colombia, Colmenares was the 2011 Saba Idol's first runner-up with his Spanish salsa and merengue songs.

This year's runner-up was Cory Junker, with only one point behind Colmenares' 165. Junker, who hails from the United States, is the owner of Saba Coffee House and Café Luna roastery in The Bottom. Canadian Saba Comprehensive School teacher Mark Dodds was second runner-up. This year's jury comprised former Saba Idol winner and barbershop owner from the Dominican Republic Johnny Mateo, Saba Divers and Scout's Place owner Barbara Tooten from Germany and former Idol winner Irvine "Topo" Riley from Saba.

Colmenares convinced the jury and the crowd with his salsa and merengue songs and stage acting. He danced on stage together with former Saba Idol and dancer Micheline Hinse. Junker was a blast with his rendition of several rock-and-roll songs and his special performance of "I'm too sexy." The scene was complete when his wife Kali Junker came on stage and ripped his shirt off in one move. The scene sparked a lot of excitement, especially with the women in the crowd, as the performer sported his muscles and tattoos on top of his vocal skills. Dodds' Culture Club performance in a Boy George outfit proved no less fantastic.

Scout's Place manager Wolfgang Tooten was the evening's host, putting on a fun and entertaining show for the large crowd. He mentioned the continued support of the many local as well as St. Maarten businesses that patron the annual competition. The growing fame of Saba Idols brought together many locals and foreigners alike, and reportedly led to several former competitors and St. Maarten residents booking trips to Saba in conjunction with the Saba Idol finals. The support and growing popularity of the competition opens the way for ambitious "super-special plans" for next year's 10th Saba Idol, said Tooten.

March 27, 2011 - In an effort to ease the process of picking up your shipments from the DAWN II at Fort Bay, here are some suggestions to follow:

Please be at the dock NO later than 7:00 pm so that you may present your invoices to the Customs officers and pay any taxes applicable. Please note that the Customs container closes at 8:00 pm.

Please advise the merchant in Sint Maarten to print two copies and send it with the items. If you would like, you can also ask the merchant to send you the invoice in advance.

Perched above its capital-The Bottom-is Queen's Gardens Resort. Atop the resort awaits the three-bedroom hideaway, Haiku House, which takes its design cues from a 16th century Japanese villa.

Call it a feast for all senses, from the soothing waters of its private pool and Jacuzzi to the breathtaking views, the Gaggenau stainless steel appliances and the fluted spruce ceilings (for maximum acoustics, naturally). Maid and chef services await. Guests can even surf cyberspace from the beautifully paneled office. They'll see, it's pure poetry. Rates at Haiku House start at $895 per night.

A handful of celebrities have flocked to the privacy of Haiku House - fortunate for them, Queen's Gardens Resort management keeps their names hush-hush.

    Antique Inn renovation
December 13, 2009 - The historical Antique Inn is currently being renovated. The Antique Inn property was privately owned by one of the Simmons families. Around the end of the 19th century the Government decided to purchase it as the residence for the Lt. Governor and his office was also in the building downstairs.

In the ninteen twenties Governor W.F.M. Lampe purchased the home of his father-in-law Capt. Thomas C. Vanterpool for the home of the Lt. Governor. He also purchased the property next to the new home of the Lt. Governor which when the old house was torn down became the Queen Wilhelmina Park.

The former home and office of the Lt. Governor was turned into a Passangrahan. That is the Indonesian word for Passing Big Shot. It served to accomodate Government officials visiting Saba from Curacao and the other Dutch islands and also the occasional writer or tourist would be housed there. The Public Library in The Bottom was housed in the downstairs room which formerly had served as the office of the Lt. Governor. Much later the place now known as Scouts Place was also purchased by the Government as a Passangrahan for Windwardside.

In 1971 the Passangrahan in The Bottom was leased to the late Mr. Clinton Cranston who renamed it The Antique Inn. After he died the building was put up for auction though it remains in the hands of the Island Government of Saba.

The old building has now been given a new lease on life by Mr. Henk Wolf. There are negotiations going on with the Dutch Government to turn it into the new regional service center, to reflect the new role which the Dutch Government will play after 1910 when they take over all the tasks which should have been the responsibility of the Government of The Netherlands Antilles headquartered in Willemstad. "Change is in the Air" - El Momo goes 100% smoke-free
July 31, 2007 - El Momo will become the first 100% smoke-free hotel on Saba. El Momo is dedicated to provide a clean, comfortable and relaxing environment for its guests. The hotel's new policy is a result from guests expressing a clear demand for a healthy, smoke-free hotel experience. Introducing a smoke-free policy is a natural evolution for the hotel which also follows an eco-friendly philosophy. Our goal is to provide a place where guests can relax and restore their mind, body and spirit in a healthy way. At El Momo we strive that our guests walk out feeling better than they did when they arrived.

Industry research, as well as our own experience, confirmed a clear consumer demand for a clean, smoke free hotel environment. El Momo's staff will benefit enormously from this effort to improve the quality of life rather than being required to enter smoke-filled rooms, experiencing holey sheets, burned matresses, stinky ashtrays, smelly rooms, curtains and walls. No employees should be required to risk their good health for the sake of their jobs. Secondhand smoke toxins and residue can stay in fabrics anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of months after initial exposure, even after they have been washed.

Like the airlines, we hope it will one day be possible for all hotels to be smoke-free. We felt it was not enough to simply limit the number of smoking rooms, or designate smoking areas. We believe the best experience for our guests is a hotel that is completely smoke-free. The new policy will be active from January 1st 2008. El Momo website

    New Tax Initiatives
April 10, 2007 - New Tax Initiatives between the U.S. and the Netherlands Antilles mean good news for meetings and convention planners. The agreement allows U.S. taxpayers to claim a tax deduction for expenses associated with a convention held in the Netherlands Antilles to the same extent as a convention held in the US. The implementation of the Tax Information Exchange Agreement means that the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles -- Bonaire; Curacao; Saba; St. Eustatius; and St. Maarten -- are considered part of the North American area. (Aruba had previously been considered part of the Netherlands Antilles until 1986 when it was granted a "status apart" and became a separate part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.) Expenses incurred while attending conventions, business meetings and seminars on the five islands are allowed as deductions according to the same regulations as if each of the five islands were a U.S. territory.
